Making a real impact
Our Chairman Peter B Moyes overviews how RotoJar is going to make a real impact in the industry.
With over 30 years’ experience designing downhole equipment and technology and with direct experience within the drilling environment, I have found that it is often the common, every day challenges that cause the most disruption, distraction and disturbance to operational activities. Some recent industry and customer research we have conducted has indicated that non-productive time due to stuck objects varies from well to well but can range from 5% to 40% and it is no surprise that success rates of stuck-object removal is estimated at a meagre 30%. As engineers we believe there is always an answer to improving the opportunity for success, and for this problem the answer we have found is RotoJar.
Stuck object challenges can present themselves across a range of scenarios including well plug and abandonment casing recovery, fishing and very significantly when drilling. But irrespective of whether stuck-object removal is planned or unplanned, not only is the Well Engineer faced with the challenge of extracting a stuck object but also the risk associated with the problem being exacerbated by jarring and other tools, the rig or indeed the well itself not surviving the rigour of extraction operations and they themselves becoming damaged.
It has been widely accepted to date that stuck object removal is not an exact science. But the RotoJar team is challenging this widely held assumption. Using the already proven logic of combining a strong tensile pull and high frequency impact, the technology behind RotoJar means we can deliver impacts on objects up to 2,500 times faster than any other conventional technology.
